Bhutanese Refugees Keep Cultural Traditions Alive

Members of the Bhutanese refugee community in Maryland gathered together on Saturday, October 22 to enjoy a youth-sponsored cultural event filled with song, dance, food and fun.

As a volunteer with the International Rescue Committee of Silver Spring (IRC), I work closely with one Bhutanese refugee family, helping them navigate their resettlement into the United States. I was honored to be invited to this event and partake in this day of celebration.

Especially impressive was the passion expressed by many of the children who performed. There were traditional dances, contemporary songs, and dramatic plays depicting the brutality many suffered as they were forced to leave Bhutan. Those who organized the event hope to offer similar gatherings in the future and create a permanent youth group dedicated to keeping Bhutanese cultural traditions alive.
